Purpose of Position

Under the supervision of the Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP) Coordinator and using PCHP guidelines, the Literacy Coach visits assigned program families for the purpose of modeling for parents how to read and play with their children, using books and toys. This increases the vocabularies and verbal interaction between parent and child, which in turn prepares the child for later school success.

Reporting Relationships

The position reports directly to the PCHP Coordinator of Miss Ruby’s Kids (MRK).

Position Essential functions in Order of Importance

  • Visit each assigned family two times each week for up to thirty (30) minutes each visit, with a 30-minute goal for most visits by the end of the first year. Case load (number of families) is subject to change at any time.
  • After each visit, complete session records and all required paperwork in a timely manner.
  • As required by policy, complete Child’s Behavior Traits (CBT) assessments, Parent and Child Together (PACT) assessments, evaluation assessments, PHCP program evaluations, and VISM evaluation assessments on child and parent behavior.
  • Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings; turn in mileage logs, time sheets, visit schedule and program records, and assessments in a timely manner; pick up curriculum materials.
  • Continually evaluate the program methods and curriculum materials for effectiveness.
  • Act as a liaison between children, parents, and the PCHP Coordinator.
  • Assist as needed and as assigned by the PCHP Coordinator with program-related workshops and events.
  • Promote the program in the community as requested and assigned by the PCHP Coordinator.
  • Assist with the recruitment of new families.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.

Work Assignment / Review / Responsibility

Work is assigned by the PCHP Coordinator and reviewed during the weekly staff meetings as well as by a review of completed paperwork. Individual performance reviews are conducted three times per year by the PCHP Coordinator. Each Literacy Coach must “show” two home visits per year by either being personally observed or videotaped, as well as a formal written evaluation.

Education, Training and Experience Requirement

  • The minimum education level is a high school diploma.
  • The minimum work experience for this job is six months post high school. The preferred work experience for this position is in early childhood education.
  • The individual must be able to work on his/her own without close/daily supervision.

Required training includes:

  • Sixteen (16) hours of PCHP Training
  • Orientation to PCHP History and Theory
  • Orientation to MRK Policies and Procedures
  • Orientation to MRK History, Staff and Board
  • Child Abuse/Neglect Prevention and Reporting Training
  • Other training as required by the PCHP National Office or MRK

Working Conditions

This position requires traveling by personal automobile to client/family homes in all weather conditions. It also requires stooping, bending, and sitting on the floor in order to interact with children on their level.

Salary: $12.00 to $14.00 /hour
