Paralegal for ACLU- Raleigh, NC

The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina Legal Foundation (ACLU-NCLF) seeks a regular, full-time Paralegal in our Raleigh offices.

The ACLU-NCLF works to defend and expand individual rights and personal freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and state and federal civil rights laws.  The ACLU legal team litigates a broad range of constitutional cases in state and federal courts, including, but not limited to, free speech, freedom of religion, LGBT equality, reproductive freedom, racial justice, criminal justice, prison and jail conditions of confinement, immigrants’ rights, and privacy rights. An affiliate of the national ACLU, the state affiliate has members across North Carolina and engages with all levels of government.

Summary of Position:

The ACLU- NC Legal Foundation is seeking a full-time Paralegal to assist its attorneys with civil liberties and civil rights litigation.  The Paralegal will work under the direction of the Legal Director and support a Staff Attorney and a Legal Fellow.  The Paralegal will be based at the ACLU-NC’s office in Raleigh, but occasional travel within NC will be required. 

Responsibilities:

  • Manage legal intake requests, including screening telephone calls and online or other written complaints, coordinating monthly intake review, and data entry;
  • Assist in case development, including factual research, legal research, interviews, information gathering and analysis;
  • Assist in case management.  Meticulously maintain legal case files (opening, ongoing maintenance and archiving) both in electronic and paper formats;
  • Manage attorneys’ calendars and process scheduling requests;
  • Maintaining good client relations;
  • Draft routine correspondence and procedural motions for attorney’s signature as needed, cite-check, proofread and format documents in preparation for filing;
  • Manage timekeeping/billing software and track expenses;
  • Support the legal team in the recruitment, selection, supervision and evaluation of law interns;
  • Coordinate legal volunteers, including cooperating attorneys, Legal Committee members, and law interns as requested by Legal Director;
  • Adhere to the highest standards of professional ethics and client confidentiality;
  • Actively support a collaborative, mutually respectful work environment within the legal team and among other office staff; and
  • Perform other administrative tasks as may be assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Paralegal certificate and two to three years’ of paralegal experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.  Federal court filing experience strongly preferred.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills with strong interpersonal aptitude and cross-cultural fluency;
  • Technologically proficient with advanced skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook and a working familiarity with the rest of the MS Office suite;
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and multiple tasks under pressure and without sacrificing attention to detail;
  • Familiarity with PACER, Westlaw, Lexis/Nexis, Amicus Attorney strongly preferred;
  • Familiarity or experience with civil rights and civil liberties issues preferred;
  • Willingness and ability to travel within NC;
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends when necessary.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are bilingual, English-Spanish.

Compensation:

Salary range is $39,00 to $45,000 per year. The ACLU provides excellent benefits including health insurance, a 401(k) retirement plan and generous leave benefits.
