Environmental Justice Coordinator with NC Conservation Network

Job Description

The NC Conservation Network (NCCN) is looking for an energetic self-starter and team player to be our Environmental Justice (EJ) Coordinator. NCCN works to protect public health and the environment across North Carolina through issue-based advocacy campaigns. NCCN supports our affiliates, participates in and often coordinates coalition campaigns, and directly advocates for a sustainable future. The EJ Coordinator will work directly with the EJ, Air, & Materials Policy Manager to advance environmental justice policies by building relationships between environmental justice communities and decision-makers to catalyze systemic change toward a healthier environment for all North Carolinians.

The EJ Coordinator works closely with other staff in the organization, advancing advocacy campaigns through coordination and support of affiliate and partner organizations. The EJ Coordinator will also partner with impacted communities and environmental justice organizations in building their capacity to actively engage with statewide and local environmental justice efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Connect impacted community-led campaigns and organizations with decision-makers on environmental justice policy issues, such as confined animal feeding operations, fracked gas pipelines, and coal ash disposal.
  • Bridge the gap between impacted community-led organizations and state and local decision-makers in order to help community leaders educate decision-makers on environmental justice considerations and principles.
  • Help partner environmental organizations build a stronger commitment and skill set for engaging in environmental justice issues.
  • Attend stakeholder and Environmental Management Commission meetings in order to engage in administrative decision-making and public engagement opportunities.
  • Collaborate with policy and organizing staff to develop environmental justice messages to educate and mobilize our Public Alert email activists and social media followers.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of applicable work experience.
  • BA/BS, preferably in political science, public health, public administration, social work, communications, environmental studies/science, or another related field.
  • Ability to and/or demonstrated lived experience working with a diverse cross-section of people and understanding of how power dynamics operate within and across them.
  • Ability to work as a part of a collaborative team as well as work independently.
  • Comfort working non-traditional hours, including occasional weekends and evenings.
  • Willingness to travel across North Carolina regularly.

Preferred

  • Lived experience with and knowledge of constituencies most impacted by environmental injustice.
  • Experience with one or a combination of the following: equity, civil rights, social justice, environmental justice, climate justice, or energy justice.
  • Experience and understanding of the key components of advocacy, state and local non-profits, politics, and policy-makers.

Salary / Compensation

Salary range: $43,000 – $50,000. Salary is negotiable and commensurate with previous applicable work experience. Employment with the NC Conservation Network includes a full benefits package, including health, dental, and retirement plan, as well as strong vacation and sick time off.
