Grant Writer & Development Coordinator

Founded in 1994, SEEDS is a two-acre urban garden and kitchen classroom in the heart of Durham. SEEDS develops the capacity of young people to respect life, each other, and the earth through growing, cooking, and sharing food. Our beautiful downtown property includes two acres of land with a classroom pavilion, a greenhouse, a chicken coop, beehives, a pond, environmental education exhibits and multiple areas for growing edible and medicinal plants. The SEEDS building, constructed in 2014, holds staff offices, a kitchen and a multipurpose classroom where young people prepare and share meals they make, using food they grow in the garden.

The Director of Development is responsible for the overall strategy of fundraising and its activities at SEEDS. SEEDS is supported annually through a combination of individual donors, private and public foundations, fundraising events, and corporations and businesses. Grant writing currently supports 40% of SEEDS’ overall annual fundraising efforts. This position will be responsible for seeking out grants, writing grants, crafting messaging and narratives about our work and impact, soliciting individual and corporate donations, planning two annual fundraising events, working with the program team to develop meaningful impacts for donor relations and support, managing the donor database, and crafting of messaging and fundraising communications. This person also manages and works collaboratively with the Executive Director to direct the fundraising strategy for SEEDS and ensure long-term financial sustainability. They report to the Executive Director.

Ideally, a candidate will have previous experience with WordPress, Salesforce, grant management, grant writing, cultivating new donors, community engagement techniques, project management, and will have proficiency using InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator to manage, edit and create communications and development materials. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel is required.

Working Conditions

The Development Coordinator may be required to stand and walk for long periods of time, to bend at the knees and hips and lift at least 30 pounds overhead. Occasional tours of the building and garden may be required for donors and funders. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with a Monday-Friday work week. Typical hours of operation are 9:00am – 5:00pm with weekend and evening hours when needed, though work hours can be flexible. Currently this position works a combination of in-office and remote work.


This position is a full-time, salaried position with benefits, starting at $20-$22 an hour, based on experience.
