How We're Supporting Students & Farmworkers

While SAF staff are unable to work from the office during the COVID-19 pandemic, we can be reached by email from our Contact Us page. Here's how we're continuing to move forward our work supporting students and farmworkers:

  • Supporting Farmworkers: We are sharing information and resources about COVID-19 with farmworkers through our Conéctate Carolina app and social media. We are working with families from our Levante Leadership Institute to support them to access food, computers, and other resources in their community.  We are working with partners to plan for how to support migrant workers this summer.
  • Supporting Students: SAF Solidaridad interns are working from home monitoring policy recommendations, mentoring migrant youth, creating communication materials, and reaching out to church partners. The Levante Leadership Institute is meeting bi-monthly through video calls.
  • Advocacy: We are working with national partners and the NC Farmworker Advocacy Network (FAN) to advocate for workplace protections for farmworkers, access to care, and housing to quarantine if necessary. Here is a link to FAN's disaster preparedness fact sheet and a list of policy recommendations sent to NC Governor Cooper.
  • Education: We have moved events, presentations, and trainings online. In place of our annual in-person NC Farmworker Institute, we held two webinars on Census 2020 and COVID-19 with advocates and outreach workers across the state.

How You Can Help

+ Take Action: Sign on to the Farmworker Advocacy Network's recommendations to NC Governor Cooper to protect agricultural workers during COVID-19. Individuals, allies and organizations are welcome to sign on!

+ Make a Donation: SAF has some new needs in light of COVID-19. We anticipate additional costs for our Into the Fields Program in terms of transportation, training, summer housing, and technology. If you’d like to make a donation to SAF, please go to our donation page. If you “make this a recurring donation” and choose monthly, the Fund for Democratic Communities will make an additional $100 donation to SAF!
