Human Trafficking Initiative Paralegal, Legal Aid of NC

Background: The Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) Human Trafficking Initiative provides civil legal services to domestic and foreign-born victims of human trafficking, strengthens statewide networks, and equips certain key partners from which these cases may develop including regional Rapid Response Teams throughout the state. LANC seeks a Human Trafficking Initiative Paralegal to assist, under the direction supervision of a licensed attorney, with the preparation of immigration petitions such as U and T visas, Adjustments of Status, requests for ORR certification, and other available relief to victims of human trafficking. This position will be housed in LANC’s Farmworker Unit, and the paralegal may also assist on immigration petitions for trafficking victims served by LANC’s Battered Immigrant Project.

Responsibilities & Duties: This is a temporary position located in the Raleigh office of the LANC Farmworker Unit and which is currently funded through September 30, 2021, with a possibility of continued funding. Responsibilities include interviewing and directly assisting clients under the supervision of a licensed attorney, drafting affidavits for clients and supporting witnesses, gathering and translating documentary evidence from Spanish to English, preparing immigration applications, obtaining supporting evidence from law enforcement and social services organizations, and coordinating with victims’ case managers to coordinate non-immigration services for the victim. The office is located in downtown Raleigh, but the paralegal will be expected to participate in some meetings with coalition partners and regional Rapid Response Teams outside of the office. The office currently operates remotely, continuing until our Executive Director determines that it is safe to return to normal.

Qualifications: Required: fluency in written and oral English and Spanish; excellent analytical and organizational skills; strong writing skills; excellent computer skills; and proven ability to learn quickly and relate well to people who are low-income or of different nationalities and cultures. Experience with migrant farmworkers or as a paralegal in the area of immigration or employment law is preferred.
