Language Justice & Latinx Family Engagement Coordinator (AmeriCorps VISTA)

The Durham Public Schools Foundation is seeking a full-time AmeriCorps VISTA to help identify and coordinate new strategies for improving language justice in DPS and DPS Foundation and support Latinx family engagement across DPS. We are looking for an individual with a strong understanding of language justice and equity and who has experience leading meaningful community engagement, especially within public school communities. 

The Language Justice & Latinx Family Engagement Coordinator is a full-time, 12-month AmeriCorps VISTA position to begin in December 2020 or January 2021. Compensation includes a living allowance provided by AmeriCorps (click here for details). Other benefits include: health care, child care, an education award of $6,095 or a stipend of $1,500 (taxable grant) at the end of service, forbearance or deferment of federal loans, and relocation allowance (if relocating more than 50 miles, not to exceed $550). The VISTA will also receive professional development opportunities from DPS Foundation. The position will be based out of our workspace in downtown Durham with the option to work from home (DPSF’s full staff is currently working remotely for the foreseeable future).

The range of responsibilities will include: 

  • Identify ways DPS Foundation can support DPS schools’ needs for translation and interpretation and help lead coordination for some identified needs, such as: 

    • Work with district and community partners to implement a language justice training for school administration and staff to identify when and how to include interpretation/translation and methods for doing so.  

    • Coordinate creation of a network of community translators/interpreters to support schools for occasional events or communications throughout the school year and/or can be called on by the school district for additional support as needed.

    • Support of the school district’s efforts to serve immigrants beyond those that speak the Spanish language to support inclusive efforts geared towards multilingual parent engagement.

    • Provide support to the Foundation in identifying and advocating for district-level needs and opportunities for language justice support. 

  • Engage with existing networks of Latinx DPS families to:

    • Identify ways the Foundation can support the development of Latinx family organizing and leadership development across DPS.

    • Support the creation of a vision for collaborative advocacy between Black and Latinx families in DPS.

  • Support DPS Foundation in identifying ways to evolve as a language just organization and provide some translation support for DPS Foundation.  

Competitive applicants for the Language Justice & Latinx Family Engagement Coordinator position will have the following skills: 

  • Understanding of language justice and knowledge about the current challenges and opportunities for language justice in Durham’s public schools.

  • Experience building and maintaining community relationships, ideally within public school communities.

  • Experience engaging and being in community with historically marginalized communities.

  • Comfort facilitating meetings and gatherings of large and diverse groups.

  • Strong racial equity lens.

  • Ability to independently execute projects and manage competing priorities. 

  • Fluency in Spanish.

  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, start-up environment. 

  • Familiarity with public education policy and knowledge of Durham public schools a plus.
