Learning Center Pod Leader, Student U

Student U is a community organization that uses the power of education, advocacy, and leadership to build a just and equitable Durham. Within systems that perpetuate racism, poverty,other systemic injustices, and that fail to allocate resources equitably, Student U sees brilliant students and engaged families who know that they’re capable of incredible things. In order to break the cycle of poverty and help shape a new future for our city, we empower and equip first-generation college students in Durham Public Schools, their families, and educators to become the leaders that will transform our city for the better

The Work

The W.G. Pearson Pod Leader role is designed for passionate individuals who believe fervently in the brilliance and potential of students. Pod Leaders will work daily throughout the school year with the same group, or “family,” of up to 10 middle or high school students, acting as an in-person assistant for students’ remote learning experience and academic coach. Pod Leaders primary responsibilities are to create a safe space for students to learn, build a strong sense of community and mutual accountability, and ensure families/DPS staff are aware of students’ progress and needs to be the most successful academic, emotional, and social versions of themselves during the school year.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

THROUGHOUT THE DURATION OF DPS PLAN C (In-Person)

  • Support with daily operations of the Learning Center including but not limited to arrival/departure, structuring academic and wellness time, distribution of snacks/meals, etc
  • Construct a productive learning environment for a classroom of up to 10 students
  • Facilitate daily whole-group community building routines and activities with your pod of students
  • Create a culture rooted in love and high expectations that is inclusive and supportive of all students
  • Reflect with students as needed using a restorative justice framework
  • Lead social-emotional and other non-academic support lessons
  • Build positive, supportive, and professional relationships with families, colleagues, and students
  • Collaborate with Student U Middle and High School staff to support the academic and personal growth of students in your pod as appropriate
  • Demonstrate the Student U Core Values in all interactions with Student U stakeholders (students, families, guests, volunteers, supporters)
  • Work with program staff to collect data and participate in the evaluation of Learning Center Programming
  • Ensure all students in your pod follow the WGPC COVID safety protocols
  • Reports to Learning Center Coordinator

  • Strongly Preferred but not required: Ability to speak Spanish.

Benefits

Compensation: $18/hour, non-exempt position
