Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF) Youth Organizing Director

MISSION: Founded in 1992, SAF is a non-profit organization that brings students and farmworkers together to learn about each other's lives, share resources and skills, improve conditions for farmworkers, and build diverse coalitions working for social change.

STAFF SIZE: 7 full-time, 1 part-time, and 40-50 youth, interns & fellows                 



  • Coordinate ongoing planning, implementation and evaluation of Levante Leadership Institute with 10 youth and families; build a base committed to SAF’s efforts to improve the education, health, legal and organizing support of farmworkers 
  • Recruit, select, & train Levante youth and parents, which includes organizing three weekend retreats, monthly workshops, volunteer opportunities, field trips and cultural arts projects 
  • Provide one-on-one mentorship for youth and serve as a resource for the youth and their families
  • Participate in child labor research project with Wake Forest School of Medicine
  • Participate in the Adelante Education Coalition to advocate for in-state tuition for undocumented students and involve Levante youth, alumni, and other farmworker youth in the coalition’s work
  • Liaison with partners and other youth groups that focus on social justice, and represent SAF on related committees and coalitions 
  • Conduct presentations and trainings about issues affecting farmworker youth to the public
  • Supervise college student intern(s) 
  • Co-coordinate SAF’s summer theater group in migrant labor camps and support other program work as needed 


  • Passionate about farmworker justice
  • Experience working directly with youth and families, particularly farmworker or migrant youth
  • Experience planning events, trainings or retreats
  • Experience using art for social change
  • Experience with popular education/community organizing
  • Strong public speaking and facilitation skills
  • Excellent organizational and archival skills and attention to detail  
  • Ability to build relationships & set professional boundaries with youth and their families
  • Ability to adapt to changes at work/be flexible and cooperate with others
  • Ability to work independently as well as on a team
  • Ability to take initiative 
  • Willing to contribute to a positive, healthy workplace
  • Willing to travel often to eastern NC and work some nights and at least one weekend/month 
  • Associate’s Degree
  • Able to make at least at least a 3-5 year commitment
  • Bicultural and excellent written and oral communication skills in Spanish & English 
  • Alumni (preferred)
  • From a farmworker family (preferred)

HOURS OF WORK: 40 hours/week, flexible schedule Mon-Fri, monthly weekend work

SALARY & BENEFITS: $33,700-$49,700 depending on experience & formal education; full paid health & dental insurance, vacation, holidays, and personal/sick leave; union contract, annual raise. 

LOCATION: SAF office in Durham; Work in Central and Eastern NC
