The Migrant Unit, a project of SCLS, serves migrant and seasonal agricultural farmworkers (MSFWs) and their dependents throughout South Carolina in a variety of civil legal matters, however, this is not an immigration law practice. The Migrant Unit is housed out of SCLS’ Charleston office and is responsible for representing MSWFs state-wide.


The Migrant Unit seeks a full time Outreach Paralegal with a commitment to or interest in social justice work in the areas of low-wage worker and/or immigrant rights. The primary role of this position is to assist in the Unit’s efforts in educating the MSFW community in South Carolina about their legal rights and assist the attorneys in the enforcement of those rights as well as providing support in immigration related matters. Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to: drafting documents for review by farmworker attorneys and the managing attorney, interviewing clients, preparing intake documents and packets, assisting in the preparation of immigration petitions, working with spread sheets to build case files, updating and maintaining information and locations/maps of farm labor camps, participating in MSFW provider meetings and outreach events, collaborating with MSFW providers and other state and federal agencies in efforts to improve the working conditions of MSFWs and perform other outreach duties as assigned.

This position requires a considerable amount of travel between May and August of each year, when the majority of MSFWs migrate to South Carolina for the summer harvest. The Unit’s advocates dedicate their major part of the summer harvest traveling to farm labor camps throughout the state providing MSFWs information about employment protections in the areas of field sanitation and housing standards, pesticide regulations, and state and federal wage laws, among others. The position requires flexible work hours with willingness to work evenings and occasional weekends during the summer harvest.

Qualifications: Must be fully proficient in written and spoken English and Spanish, a Bachelor’s degree, associate’s degree or certificate program in paralegal studies is preferred, but not required. Candidate must be detail-oriented, have good organizational skills and be proficient in Microsoft Office.

Salary and benefits: Depending on experience. SCLS provides excellent health, disability and fringe benefits package.
