UNC Family Medicine Summer Academy

The UNC FMSA accepts graduating high school students and first-year college students between the ages of 18-20 from rural areas of North Carolina who are interested in a career in medicine and a passion for rural service.

Scholars come to Chapel Hill during the summer for a two-and-a-half day immersion in family medicine while they stay on the UNC-CH campus.

Family medicine physicians provide lectures on healthcare needs in NC and medical school requirements.  Hands-on learning opportunities include suturing workshops, ultrasound demonstration and “shadowing” in the UNC School of Medicine simulation center.

At the conclusion of the program, scholars receive a mentor to provide continuing guidance and support.
