About the Duke Campus Farm:

The Duke Campus Farm is a one-acre working farm, now in its eighth season, which provides sustainably-grown produce and food systems education for Duke and its surrounding communities. In collaboration with our undergraduate and graduate student farm crew, academic courses, and research, we grow and harvest for Duke’s dining halls and our Community Supported Agriculture program. More important than the thousands of pounds of food that we grow, however, are the opportunities the farm provides for engaging and reimagining the ways we cultivate, access, value, and think about food. Our mission is to catalyze positive change in the food system.

About the position:

As our program expands, this is a critical moment for the Duke Campus Farm (DCF) to communicate our goals and mission. The Program Assistant therefore plays a key role by providing communications and administrative support, serving as a conduit between the work happening at DCF and the network of people that support it. The position also provides day-to-day supervision for various undergraduate and graduate student employees working in support of our programming and administrative operations. Primary supervision of this position will come from the Assistant Program Manager of DCF, with secondary from the Program Director.  

This is a 30 hr week/position paying $28,860 and includes Duke benefits including paid vacation and sick days, and health, dental, and vision insurance. This is a one year position with the possibility of renewal.  

Work performed:

Communications:

  • Create compelling written, visual and video content for our social media platforms, quarterly newsletter, website, annual report, and end of year appeal. Document farm landscapes and events in high quality photos and short videos adapted to multiple audiences and platforms.Track and cross-post food and ag-related events at Duke and in Durham on DCF social media accounts.

  • Coordinate marketing and publicity of our workdays, job openings, events and our produce across multiple electronic and print media, including web, email, listservs, social media, posters, advertisements, etc.

  • Oversee the production of brochures, bulletins, and other promotional materials and publications for designated audiences.

  • Develop a strategy to maximize effectiveness of publicity efforts for different audiences through new and existing channels

Program Coordination and administration:

  • Coordinate logistics for a range of DCF activities, including course collaborations, workshops, Alternative Break programs, CSA membership drives, and other on-farm events

  • Financial and HR administration: coordinate hiring, enrollment, and payroll, staff receipt reconciliation

  • Manage general Duke Campus Farm email account

  • Manage and maintain databases of DCF volunteers, newsletter recipients and other stakeholders

  • Conduct basic website and digital file maintenance (seasonal web upkeep, photo organizing, faculty MOUs, etc.)

Supervision

  • Train and supervise 1-2 student staff in support of the above.
     

Experience
We’re seeking a proactive, quick learner with exceptional people and communications skills. Work requires analytical, communications, and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program. Work requires one year of experience in program development and support, communications and publicity, and/or budget management. Background in food systems work highly desirable.

  • Excellent writing and professional communication skills, including writing for a variety of media, public speaking to groups of all sizes 

  • Strategic thinker with strong interpersonal skills, including ability to work as a team member and leader, as well as ability to work independently

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multifaceted programs, prioritize ongoing and deadline-based tasks, and to work with shifting priorities and schedules

  • Curiosity about food systems issues and equity frameworks for tackling them

  • Eagerness and ability to interact with students      
                                                     

Job Skills Desired                        

  • Experience with website maintenance and Work@Duke

  • Graphic design, data visualization, photography, Adobe Audition, Final Cut Pro or other audio and video editing software experience a plus
