My name is Raúl Egremy Jr. and I am from Benson, North Carolina. I was born in Brownsville, Texas and my family is from Matamoros, Tamaulipas in Mexico. My dad and mom lived there until 10 years ago, when we moved to North Carolina.
I joined the Levante program to get more involved in my community and to learn about social justice. I want to learn more about the issues and injustices farmworkers face and how to help better their situation.
My mom is an employee at the North Carolina Farmworker Project in Benson, NC. She is the Covid-19 commander– she basically goes to the fields to inform farmworkers about Covid-19 and the vaccine. I help my mom sometimes with going to the fields to do outreach, where we give out information to the workers and give them some goods that were donated to the NCFP.
One of the people that works with my mom was part of SAF's Levante program a few years back. She told my mom about the program which got me interested and that's when I signed up to be part of the program.
I am most excited for the activities we will do to help inform people about farmworkers and their injustices and to get more involved in the protection of farmworkers' rights.
