The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) is an award-winning worker-led human rights organization based in Immokalee, Florida, internationally recognized for its impact in combatting long-standing human rights abuses in the agriculture industry from wage theft and dangerous working conditions to sexual assault and forced labor. As the creator of the Presidential Medal-winning Fair Food Program, the CIW’s groundbreaking work has not only led the charge for eradicating egregious human rights violations in agriculture, it has created a proven path for real prevention.
IMPORTANT INTERNSHIP DATES AND DEADLINES
- Summer internships typically span from June to August. Applications must be submitted by May 22.
- Fall internships typically span from September to December. Applications must be submitted by July 15.
- Spring internships typically span from January to May. Applications must be submitted by November 15.
INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES
This internship is based in Immokalee, FL. Ideal candidates are highly responsible, work well in teams as part of a fast-paced environment, and committed to advancing the CIW’s movement for Fair Food. Exact internship dates are determined on an individual basis, though applicants should be prepared to commit to a period of 3-5 months. Interns are provided a monthly stipend and free housing.
Intern responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist with office tasks such as phones, copying, databasing, mail, and accounting
- Provide on-the-ground support to CIW (translation, technical assistance, driving, etc.)
- Action, event and mobilization logistics
- Learn first-hand about the Campaign for Fair Food, uniquely successful Fair
Food Program, sweatshop conditions and modern-day slavery in the fields, etc. - Create campaign strategy with a team of farmworkers and student- and faith-
based organizers - Develop a wide range of organizing skills such as coalition building,
campaigning, media work, materials production, database management, mobilization planning, and fundraising
IDEAL CANDIDATES SHOULD POSSESS:
- Strong commitment to social and economic justice and working as part of a collective
- Prior organizing experience
- Conversational in Spanish
- Prior experience living in or working with immigrant communities
- Willingness to work long and unpredictable hours, including late nights and weekends
- Self-motivated and skilled at juggling multiple tasks
- Basic computer proficiency and communication skills
- Availability of at least 4-5 months to live and work in Immokalee, FL
