Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF) Program Coordinator

MISSION: Founded in 1992, SAF is a non-profit organization that brings students and farmworkers together to learn about each other's lives, share resources and skills, improve conditions for farmworkers, and build diverse coalitions working for social change. www.saf-unite.org

STAFF SIZE: 7 full-time, 1 part-time, and 40-50 youth, interns & fellows                 ANNUAL BUDGET: $853k

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with Program Director to implement & evaluate the Into the Fields internship program with 25 students
  • Conduct presentations about farmworkers & recruit applicants for program
  • Assist with the interviewing & selection of interns & matching interns with sponsoring organizations
  • Assist with coordination of intern weeklong orientation & two weekend trainings
  • Revise materials & co-coordinate ongoing communication with sponsoring organizations
  • Co-coordinate intern housing, including locating housing, pre-occupancy inspections & contracts
  • Supervise and mentor a group of interns & conduct site visits with them                             
  • Support intern fundraising
  • Support payment of interns, housing, and retreat centers
  • Work with Youth Organizer to coordinate SAF’s summer theater group in migrant labor camps
  • Support the Computers & Connectivity project with workers in labor camps (to be concluded in May 2022)
  • Maintain Conéctate Carolina app – update directory of farmworker organizations with current contact info & alerts to share with farmworkers
  • Supervise Solidaridad intern during the academic year
  • Represent SAF on related committees/coalitions and support other program work as needed

SKILLS / QUALIFICATIONS

  • Passionate about farmworker justice
  • Experience working with college students or youth
  • Experience planning trainings or retreats
  • Experience with popular education, popular theater, or participatory methods of education
  • Strong facilitation skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to build relationships with partner organizations, students, and farmworkers
  • Ability to adapt to changes at work/be flexible and cooperate with others
  • Ability to work independently as well as on a team
  • Ability to take initiative
  • Willing to contribute to a positive, healthy workplace
  • Willingness to travel and work some nights and weekends
  • Associate’s Degree
  • Able to make at least at least a 2-3 year commitment
  • Bicultural and excellent written and oral communication skills in Spanish & English
  • Alumni (preferred)
  • From a farmworker family (preferred)

HOURS OF WORK: 40 hours/week, flexible schedule with some evenings or weekends

SALARY & BENEFITS: $37,000-$52,900 depending on experience & formal education; full paid health & dental insurance, vacation, holidays, and personal/sick and quarantine leave; annual seniority raise; union contract

LOCATION: SAF office in Durham (virtual work option during pandemic)
