You Can Vote - Director of Communications

Are you ready to serve as a part of a leadership team committed to educating and empowering citizens to use the power of their voice through a participatory democracy? 

You Can Vote (YCV) is seeking a Director of Communications to develop and lead best-in-class marketing and communications strategy to ensure all citizens are able to successfully cast a ballot. 

About The Opportunity

A collaborative member of the Executive Leadership Team, the Director of Communications reports to and serves as a close thought partner with the Executive Director.

Organizational growth and the development of voters and community leaders is our objective. The Director of Communications will advance the evolving and growing needs of YCV with a sharp focus on ensuring our community understands, engages, and invests in our mission. 

The Director of Communications will create, lead and implement a communications strategy to build awareness of YCV’s programs and services across North Carolina. The Director will be responsible for internal and external communications, public relations, marketing, brand management, and social media for the organization. They will oversee digital marketing, graphic design, video production, and social media functions in collaboration with other staff and lead relationships with external partners as needed to achieve specific objectives.

Essential Functions

Leadership & Strategy

  • Serve as a dynamic, energetic, and inspiring member of the Executive Leadership Team
  • Shape a broad understanding and acceptance of the value of marketing within the organization
  • Foster a culture in which each department is supportive of YCV’s marketing goals
  • Work closely with organizational leadership to develop and implement an internal communications plan that supports the organization and its programs through a rapidly changing electoral landscape
  • Lead as an ambassador and spokesperson for YCV as needed and articulate mission and vision to external constituents, community partners, and potential funders
  • Supervise Communications staff, interns, contractors, and volunteers to understand and accomplish the organization’s communications and marketing goals
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies, procedures, and applicable laws
  • Support YCV’s voter registration, education, and empowerment efforts by leading and developing comprehensive strategies to increase the visibility of YCV’s mission and programs

Communications

  • Implement a multifaceted communications plan, including email, website, social media, print, radio, and televised media to share information about YCV’s mission, programs, and reports related to voter education and voter registration
  • Evaluate and drive the use of new technology for communications and marketing, including social media and web-based tools
  • Effectively communicate and interact with leadership, staff, partners, and other key stakeholders
  • Collaborate with field staff to leverage regional partnerships that advance YCV’s communications goals 
  • Maintain a content calendar that promotes YCV’s goals via multiple channels, including web, email, and social media
  • Ensure all YCV best practices on communications and messaging are 100% nonpartisan and that staff and volunteers have access and training on YCV’s strict communication and branding protocols 

Marketing

  • Align marketing channels and strategy  with YCV’s  strategic plan and organizational goals
  • Cultivate relationships with key stakeholders for brand-building and marketing initiatives
  • Collaborate with organizational leadership to support programs and initiatives through effective marketing
  • Communicate marketing vision, goals, and projects within YCV to advance organizational initiatives
  • Oversee marketing functions in collaboration with other members of the Communications team, including all collateral, YCV website, videography, public relations campaigns, newsletters, annual report, program brochures, flyers, etc.
  • Manage and oversee YCV’s brand to ensure consistent and compelling messaging and brand usage in all materials
  • Conceptualize and implement marketing campaigns aimed at YCV’s target demographics that promote YCV’s programs, mission, and brand 
  • Manage marketing campaigns to ensure key goals are set, aligned, and achieved
  • Display sensitivity to the cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of YCV’s target populations, including justice-involved individuals, BIPOC communities, persons with disabilities, and students and young people

Knowledge, Skills, Competencies

  • Strategic thinker with a relentless focus on improving systems, coordinating efforts, using data to drive decision-making, and a commitment to reaching goals

  • Technologically savvy with knowledge of current digital marketing channels

Minimum Requirements

  • Executive-level leadership experience in a communications and marketing role
  • Experience working in foundations, nonprofits, campaigns, and/or civic service agencies
  • Bachelor’s degree in a marketing or communications-related field or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of experience in marketing and communications 
  • 6+ years of experience in a leadership role leading individuals and teams preferred

Compensation and Benefits 

This is a full-time salaried position following a successful three-month contract period. This position requires some travel within North Carolina (up to 20%). 

The schedule is flexible but does include nights and weekends due to the nature of the work. You Can Vote values flexibility while achieving positive outcomes for voter education and turnout. Our successful candidate will be passionate about the people of North Carolina and delighted to work with a multiracial, multigenerational team of nonpartisan leaders across the state. Full-time employees received health, dental, and vision and can participate in YCV’s 401k retirement savings plan. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
