America Juarez-Maldonado, SAF Solidaridad intern
During my internship as a Solidaridad intern, I witnessed the growth of each student I worked with in the Levante Leadership Institute youth program. There were times where communication was difficult because of internet issues, but each of them has their own story and has so much to offer to the world. Having the opportunity to meet with some of the youth in person was so exciting and was a privilege.
Reflecting back on my work, I notice a need for more support for students within the educational system. Latinx students from farmworker backgrounds in high school do not have enough support – such as college prep or help with college applications. The change for a more just life begins within the system they learn in and where the majority of their life is spent. Educating future generations has to start with a curriculum that teaches the truth but is also a place where students can figure out their identity, instead of being told who they should be.
Beyond the educational system, there are other issues present within farmworker communities – food insecurities, lack of workplace protections, health disparities, and more. Those issues are still present, which is why we need to call for change to happen now!
