As farmworkers continue to be disproportionately affected by the pandemic as well as stresses from climate change, low wages, unsafe working conditions, and crowded housing, we are looking towards the future and envisioning what farm work could look like in the coming years.
We started by pairing SAF interns with farmworkers across North Carolina and South Carolina on a documentary project to share their visions for what they want the future to look like for themselves personally and what the future of agriculture should look like. They discussed their ideas together and then made photographs and videos and wrote letters to themselves 10 years from now.
We’re continuing this project by engaging more workers, students, allies, advocates, and community members to share photos, videos, text, and audio containing their visions for the future. Together, we’ll create a collective vision of what farm work can look like and we’ll use this vision in our advocacy and education work to build towards it together.
