Christian Sanchez, 2022 SAF intern
NC Farmworkers' Project
This plant resembles a lot of things in my opinion. To me, it resembles "GROWTH". Growth in a way that things can change for the better. This is what I want for my job, my peers, and for the people who work and suffer in farm work. I took this photo at a campsite where farmworkers grew this herb near where they live. That day we met with the farmworkers to do our documentary project with them. This involved the farmworkers photopraphing an image and writing about what that photo represents from their point of view.
When I took this photo for the worker I was helping, I saw this photo as a resemblance of growth. The way farmworkers are being unfairly treated in so many ways really gets to me at times. Then I realize that there are people out there that do care about farmworkers, we do. We SAFistas care about workers, and so many others do too. That just proves that there is some good left in this world where we can improve, grow, and help the movement. Because without farmworkers, most of what we eat wouldn't be on our breakfast, lunch, and dinner tables.
My participation throughout the whole summer has impacted me by making me more outgoing than I ever have been. I have always considered myself more of an introvert, not stepping out of my shell. However, that's how life is. Sometimes you have to break out of your own shell in order to grow and become more than you have ever imagined. Life tends to throw you these things, not just for the fun of it, but for a reason. I think this internship made me become much more and I am thankful for being able to grow, help others, and step out of my shell.
