My usual day at work...

julio 15, 2022 By Hector Guerrero, 2022 SAF intern, Legal Aid NC-Farmworker Unit

– Hector Guerrero, 2022 SAF intern
Legal Aid NC-Farmworker Unit

My usual day at work begins with waking up at 7 am to get into the shower and then make breakfast. I then drive 10 minutes to get into the Legal Aid of North Carolina building in downtown Raleigh to begin my day at the office. My work day typically starts with greeting everyone at the office before sitting at my desk.

During my time in the office I have been educated extensively on the injustices that migrant farmworkers face and the way the system handles those injustices. I have learned how this messed up system was put into place and how much power it gives to the growers that contract these workers. I've also learned the ways that the office is able to help farmworkers or allow them to have some sense of security. I have been given many projects to help with cases that, although they have been office work, have been very engaging because of the purpose it has given me.

I have also been taught the inner working of an office space which was something I had never experienced before. I've learned to navigate different computer shortcuts, file electronic documents, create spreadsheets, and organize emails. I have had very fulfilling experiences with all the staff and could not have asked for a better supervisor. Although it is a law firm, and I am not allowed to disclose too much information, I am really grateful for the opportunity I have received to have such an early experience in this type of setting. I look forward to further educating myself in this position and discovering more eye-opening experiences.
