Who am I? What am I doing here?

noviembre 15, 2024 By Catalina Rodriguez, Solidaridad intern 2024

At 22, I’m a proud graduate of Campbell University with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish, a reflection of my deep connection to my Colombian roots. Growing up as a second-generation American, I’ve navigated the rich tapestry of two cultures, which has profoundly shaped my identity. My family’s vibrant traditions and values instilled in me a strong sense of community and resilience, while my education has allowed me to bridge cultural gaps and embrace diversity. As an interpreter, I’ve had the privilege of facilitating communication for individuals from diverse backgrounds, which has illuminated the barriers many face in accessing essential services. This experience has sparked a passion for advocacy, driving me to work towards creating equitable opportunities for underrepresented communities. I am committed to using my skills to uplift others, fostering understanding and connection in a world that can often feel divided.

I was motivated to apply to SAF because I deeply resonate with its mission to promote cultural understanding and advocacy for marginalized communities. Having grown up as a second-generation American, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges faced by individuals navigating language barriers and cultural differences. I believe that SAF provides a unique platform to develop my skills further and amplify the voices of those who often go unheard.

My primary goals include honing my advocacy skills, expanding my network, and gaining practical experience that will allow me to create meaningful change in my community. I’m particularly excited about the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded individuals who share a passion for social justice and cultural awareness.

However, I also anticipate challenges, especially in navigating complex systemic issues and balancing advocacy work with personal growth. I’m prepared to confront these obstacles head-on, viewing them as opportunities for learning and resilience. Overall, I’m eager to immerse myself in this transformative experience and contribute to a mission that aligns so closely with my values.
