Working with the land community

octubre 1, 2021 By Tony B. Nguyen, Solidaridad intern

Tony B. Nguyen, Solidaridad intern

My name is Tony B. Nguyen. I am originally from Fredericksburg, Virginia, but most recently I am coming from Greensboro, North Carolina, where I had been living for the past five years.

I am working with SAF over this next year as a Solidaridad Intern as part of my graduate school internship requirements for The Divinity School at Duke University here in Durham, North Carolina. I am in the middle of my second year of a three-year Master of Divinity degree, which is a degree traditionally for the training of Christian leaders, teachers, and preachers.

Throughout my studies, I have been exploring the intersection of Christian faith, teaching, tradition, and practice as they relate to modern concerns regarding food, food justice, food systems, sustainable agriculture, socioeconomics, and the overall flourishing of what renowned American environmentalist Aldo Leopold once called “the land community”—that is, all creatures (human and non-human) together with the entire biosphere.

Prior to joining SAF, I have been working at various sustainable agriculture farms across North Carolina—including Faithfull Farms in Chapel Hill, Duke Campus Farm in Durham, and New Garden Farm in Greensboro.

Thus, I am excited to receive this new opportunity of working with Victoria and SAF to grow in my knowledge and expertise on food systems, policy, advocacy, and organization in hopes that, upon graduating from Duke, I will be capable and of service in working toward more equitable and life-giving means of cultivating food not only for eaters but especially for farmworkers and the lands upon which farmworkers have their beings.
